German Helmets
German helmets have been a prized collectible item for quite a while. The Germans were known for making quality helmets that were not only functional, but looked good as well. The making of German helmets has really evolved over the years since the First World War.
It seems that the helmets from World War 2 draw most of the attention, partly because of the way the look and of course the history behind them.
It was during the First World War that the German army realized they needed helmets after only issuing cloth or leather caps to their troops. Those of course did not provide any protection against a well aimed bullet and during the trench warfare phase, that become ever more apparent. It was then the Germans started issuing the Stahlhelm (Steel Helmet) to their new incoming troops and troops in the field.

The Stahlhelm was designed by Dr. Friedirch Schwerd in 1915 after he conducted a study of the head wounds troops were suffering. It officially was referred to as the Model 1916 and once they began issuing them, head wounds dropped drastically.
As the years progressed, enhancements were made to the helmets and a new model was released. The models started with the M1916, M1917, M1918, M1933, M1935, M1940, M1942, M1944, M1945, M1954, M1956,.
Germany exported its helmets and there have been different types of variations manufactured in other countries.
